As you have heard in national news, a serious defect in software used by millions of websites to encrypt sensitive communications was discovered earlier this week. The flaw is so significant, it has been given a nickname: Heartbleed. It allows an attacker to remotely access data from website servers that use an encryption program called OpenSSL.

Our Grant Source vendor, Good Done Great, uses the OpenSSL software to secure passwords and encryption keys.  Upon learning about Heartbleed, Good Done Great took immediate action. This includes, among other activities, installing an updated version of OpenSSL, which no longer includes the Heartbleed defect.

Our other online services – My NHCF, our online scholarship application, and our donation form – do not use OpenSSL and were not affected.

There is no evidence to suggest any of the information included in your Grant Source profile is compromised. However, as a precautionary safety measure, all participating nonprofits on Grant Source are required to change their password as soon as possible.

In general, the following password security protocols are strongly recommended:

  • Use long, complex passwords: For example, passwords should be at least 6 characters and include a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Create a unique username password for each account you manage online.
  • Change your passwords frequently, at least every 4 to 6 weeks.

Security is a critical component of the services we provide and your trust is our most valued asset. We will continue to monitor this issue and provide more information as necessary.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Donna Shaffer-Micucci, Director of Information Services, at 603-225-6641 or dsm@nhcf.org.
